STEP BACK IN TIME

Stamford is steeped in history and it can be seen all around, from the ruined walls that once surrounded to the town, to the Norman castle, of which the curtain wall at the junction of Castle Dyke and Bath Row survives.
The Romans were first to build around this area, but it was the Anglo-Saxons who chose Stamford as their main town. The settlement grew after it was made a borough in 972 by King Edgar. It then became known for producing Stamford Ware and woollen cloth known simply as Stamford cloth.

There are mentions of Stamford in various historical texts, including Shakespeare's Henry IV part 2, which mentions Stamford’s annual fair - the largest street fair in Lincolnshire and one of the largest in the country. There was also a time when bulls would run wild through the streets as part of the Stamford Bull Run festival, which ran for over 600 years.
